COLOURS I have previously written in the news column regarding all the breed clubs wish for a change to our breed standard which would state in more detail the permitted colours of beagles. The present standard simply quotes:- Any recognised hound colour other than liver. Tip of stern white. This has caused much concern for a number of years as less knowledgeable people in the breed who have registered beagle puppies have had little idea what are the acceptable colours. Over the years all kinds of colour combinations have been registered with the Kennel Club such as Silver or Gold etc. The K.C. registration data base cannot hold numerous colour combinations and it has taken some time to come up with a suitable change to the standard to cover all the colours that the registration data base can hopefully accept and work to. The Kennel Club has accepted the changes put forward by the breed clubs and we have now been notified the change to the standard will be accepted from 01 January 2010. The changed paragraph will now read. Tricolour (black, tan and white); blue, white and tan; badger pied; hare pied; lemon pied; lemon and white; red and white; tan and white; black and white; and all white. With the exception of all white, all the above mentioned colours can be found as mottle. No other colours permissible. Tip of the stern white. Hopefully any further unusual colour combinations will no longer be registered and we are also sure the changes will be helpful to judges who are not breed specialists. If anyone is having a problem recognising the less common colours see The Beagle Standard Page as Sam Goldberg had written a detailed colour description with pictures. If you have any questions Sam will be only too happy to assist, you can contact her by email samgoldberg@btinternet.com.
GREEDY BEAGLES Just been reading the Beagle Assoc. newsletter so for anyone who doesn’t receive it there is an interesting article by Vet. Sam Goldberg our Vice Chair & Breed Health Coordinator regarding greedy beagles and what can be very dangerous for them to consume. I knew about chocolate, grapes, raisins and chewing gum but I didn’t realise onions in any form can be dangerous and also a lesser known problem is cocoa mulch, so Sam says check bark chippings and such like when revamping your borders as this can be tasty to Beagles and is toxic. Thanks Sam for the advice, there is always something to learn and look out for when caring for our mischievous hounds.
SURPRISE PRESENTATION TO ERIC JONES
COMPETITION WIN Christine Hartland sent me the following good news, (hope fame isn't going to go to Fairmaid's head and she starts charging for photographs.) The University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science “Dog Bandana” Competition, sponsored by Hills Pet Nutrition. It was with immense pleasure, which quickly turned into pride, as I began to read a letter which had arrived for me a few days ago. I had entered a photographic competition in September,2009. being run by The University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, sponsored by Hills Pet Nutrition, to raise funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind; the entries had to show the dog actually wearing a bandana, but I quickly discovered that it was obviously not meant to fit our lovely breed, but nevertheless, I did my best, and one of my photographs had won the prize for “Cutest Photo”……….Sabinhay Fairmaid’s prize is a 3 month supply of food, something not to be sniffed at, except by a beagle of course ! WOW FAIRMAID!...and the photos will be used by both Hills and The School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, so we may be seeing much more of her in the future. Fairmaid has had a wonderful 12 months since becoming a veteran too. She was the winner of the Prettiest Bitch class and 2nd in the Veteran class at Beagle Welfare’s 30th. anniversary, qualified for Crufts, 2010.at Darlington Champ. Show under breed specialist, Mrs Jen Davies (Seevad), qualified at Tyne, Wear and Tees Show for The Hound of the Year Show, and also raised funds for Beagle Welfare by taking part in a sponsored walk along with myself. Sabinhay Fairmaid is certainly following in the footsteps of our last beagle, Sabinhay Singwell, proving herself a worthy successor too, as our dear friend David Nicholson always hoped that she would. We feel privileged yet again to have another “Sabinhay”entrusted to our care and in our lives again. Christine Hartland.
